History of Yawman and Erbe- About 1877 a contrivance called the Shannon Arch File, for filing letters, bills, and other papers, was invented, patented, and put on the market by a Mr. James Shannon. YAWMAN & ERBE Antique Oak File Cabinet 4 Vertical & 12 Horizontal Drawers - $1,599.91. We have for your consideration an antique file cabinet made of beautifully grained oak wood by Yawman & Erbe. It features four (4) vertical file drawers at the top and twelve (12) horizontal letter-sized drawers. Inside each of the twelve letter-sized drawers there is a metal arch-clip for archiving.

It features four (4) vertical file drawers at the top and twelve (12) horizontal letter-sized drawers. Inside each of the twelve letter-sized drawers there is a metal arch-clip for archiving or sequencial storage of hole-punched paper items. There is a mark on each arch-clip 'Yawman & Erbe Mfg. Co. Roches Ter. N.Y. Shannon's Pat. July '29 '79.' (we believe 1879) There is a brass plate on the front of the cabinet that has been engraved 'From Wall, Nichols Comp'y Honolulu, HI.' Each drawer has a brass handle or finger-pull. Each finger-pull is embossed with a fancy script initials logo. Side note - we found that the 'Wall Nichols Company' in Honolulu Hawaii was a musical instrument and sheet music store. We found it mentioned in archives dating 1900 and 1902. This cabinet measures 43 1/4' tall x 24 3/4' wide x 17 5/8' deep. We believe it to date to the late 19th century based on the patent dates. There is a unique-looking locking mechanism on the bottom front that locks all of the horizontal file drawers (it does not lock the vertical file drawers). The mechanism turns easily to lock and unlock but we don't have the key that would secure the lock so that it could not but unturned. All the drawers slide well. This antique file cabinet is pre-owned. It shows mild wear and is in overall excellent condition. The base has been reinforced with 2x4 wood boards on the underside.
